Stewardship Johannesburg project

Speculative smart cities project

In collaboration with the industrial design department at the University of Johannesburg. We were tasked to create a solution for Stewardship in the city of Johannesburg in terms of the forth industrial revolution .

Stewardship is defined as:
Stewardship is taking care of something like a large household, the arrangements for a group or the resources of a community (Dictionary, 2020).
- An example of stewardship is the responsibility of managing the staff of an estate.
- An example of stewardship is the act of making wise use of the natural resources provided by the earth.

Our Approach

Because of the fourth Industrial revolution many menial workers such as security guards will lose their jobs. Braamfontein is also becoming a major destination for visitors but currently lacks proper way finding information and tourist services.

The psychological drivers
•Security/control
•Pleasure/stimulation
•Relatedness/belonging
•Competence/ Effectance
We are offering a tourist service that will operate in Newtown and Braamfontein. The service is centered around re-skilling security guards who will most likely loss their job in the forth industrial revolution. Security guards were chosen as the ambassadors for the service as they have a unique and well versed understanding of these two areas.

The operation will be primarily based out of the Old Park Station in Newtown. The Old Park Station is an ideal location as:
The Station has a massive historical context- Johannesburg was build around that station. The station was build in the Victorian era and was used throughout multiple wars and now is used as an event location.
Old park Station is also not being used in a permanent manner and is ideally located to many historical and art centres.

The hub will feature previews of the tours that fall into three main categories, history, art and culture. As well as seating areas and interactive screens.

The tour guides will be fitted with a Jacket that allows them to perform their duties and be easily identified.
