3D Printed Table Lamp
August 25, 2020
This is a follow up to a project that was originally suppose to include the use of metal, but turning into a full additive manufactured proof of concept. More details into the initial design process can be found here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/94020831/DES-403-Metal-Project-Table-Light
Testing and Building
I started by printing smaller test pieces to see how the light strips would be installed and how smooth the final prints could be.
Next, was to printing the pieces in their entirety. The lamp shade support had to print in two pieces for two reasons. One, the build volume of my printer would not be tall enough. Two, I wanted to find a way to print without using support material which reduced the time and material waste.
Here, I am testing the final pieces for the main switch to turn the lamp on and off. The finish of the 3d printed involved sanding (100 to 400 grit), followed by a few coats of auto body filler primer sanded again, and finally a couple coats of matte black spray.
The shade itself was printed out of clear PETG. As a future consideration I would opt to try and using a paper material for the shade to reduce the weight of the shade. Currently there is a bit of sagging due to the weight of the plastic shade.
